Inglis Housing Corporation, the Philadelphia-based developer of affordable, wheelchair-accessible apartments for people with physical disabilities, hosted a dedication ceremony and open house October 10, 2007 for Inglis Gardens at Germantown.

Located at 332 E. Walnut Lane in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, this latest Inglis Housing initiative features 10 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom wheelchair-accessible apartments. It also features laundry facilities, a large community room and off-street parking.

Inglis Foundation Board Chair Luisa Rabe commented, “These apartments represent another step forward in Inglis’ commitment to developing affordable, accessible housing so that more and more people with physical disabilities may fulfill their goal of living independently and enjoy the best possible quality of life.”

Inglis’ expertise in accessibility design makes its apartments desirable for people who use wheelchairs. Using building accessibility standards that go beyond the requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, tenants enjoy wider doorways; lower ramp pitch; light switches, thermostats and electrical receptacles at wheelchair height; and kitchens and bathrooms easily maneuvered by someone in a wheelchair.

Inglis Housing also provides financial accessibility through partnerships with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Philadelphia Housing Authority for rental subsidies that reduce qualified tenants’ rents to approximately 30% of their income.

Architects Cecil Baker & Partners designed the garden-style complex with Domus, Inc. as the general contractor. Construction of the $4.1 million project was completed in August 2007.

Funding partners for Inglis Gardens at Germantown include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, Sovereign Bank, Philadelphia Office of Housing and Community Development, Redevelopment Authority of the City of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and Inglis Foundation.

Inglis Gardens at Germantown tenants were greeted by distinguished guests attending the dedication and open house including: Pennsylvania State Representatives Dwight Evans and John Myers, and Philadelphia City Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller.

Founded in 1975, Inglis Housing Corporation develops affordable, wheelchair-accessible independent living apartments for people with physical disabilities. Inglis has 176 occupied apartments located throughout the Delaware Valley and South Jersey, with another 90 in development. In January 2008, the organization plans to open Inglis Apartments at Elmwood, featuring 31 one-bedroom and nine three-bedroom apartments in Southwest Philadelphia.
