INGLIS HOUSING CORPORATION OPENS WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE APARTMENTS IN SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA

(Philadelphia, PA) – Inglis Housing Corporation, the Philadelphia-based developer of affordable, wheelchair-accessible apartments for people with physical disabilities, announced the opening of Inglis Apartments at Elmwood, a 40-unit, fully wheelchair-accessible apartment complex.

Located at 6200 Eastwick Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia, this latest Inglis Housing initiative features 31 one-bedroom and nine three-bedroom independent living apartments. It also features laundry facilities, a large community room and off-street parking. The complex is conveniently located near shopping, public transportation and medical facilities.

Inglis Housing Corporation Director of Project Development Arthurette Morris-Stone commented, “These apartments represent another step forward in Inglis’ commitment to developing affordable, accessible housing so that more people with physical disabilities may fulfill their goal of living independently and enjoy the best possible quality of life.”

The completion of Inglis Apartments at Elmwood brings the organization’s housing stock to 216 occupied units with 50 more in the development stage. Inglis’ expertise in accessibility design makes its apartments desirable for people who use wheelchairs. Using building accessibility standards that go beyond  requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act and other industry standards, tenants enjoy wider doorways; lower ramp pitch; light switches, thermostats and electrical receptacles at wheelchair height; and kitchens and bathrooms easily maneuvered by someone in a wheelchair.

Inglis Housing also provides financial accessibility through a partnership with the Philadelphia Housing Authority for rental subsidies that reduce qualified tenants’ rents to approximately 30% of their income.

Architects Cecil Baker & Partners designed the three-story complex with Domus, Inc. as the general contractor. Construction of the $10.4 million project was completed in December 2007. Full occupancy is scheduled for March 31, 2008.

Funding partners for Inglis Apartments at Elmwood include the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, Philadelphia Office of Housing and Community Development, Redevelopment Authority of the City of Philadelphia, MMA Financial, Inc. and Inglis Foundation.

Founded in 1975, Inglis Housing Corporation develops affordable, wheelchair-accessible independent living apartments for people with physical disabilities. Inglis Housing Corporation is a subsidiary of non-profit Inglis Foundation, which works with people with physical disabilities to create and provide practical solutions so they may pursue their life goals. Other services include long-term care, an adult day program, care management, durable medical equipment, home health care services and community employment.
