Holiday Greeting 2014

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spoken to many people having problems finding their holiday spirit this year.  Frequently we are exposed to troubling images and news from Ferguson, MO to New York City and Washington DC; from Hong Kong to Bagdad, Liberia and here at home in Philadelphia.   So many times good news is eclipsed by bad, but when I ask myself where to find the holiday spirit, I look at what we see each day at Inglis: LOVE.

Since the beginning, the world has always been a harsh – yet beautiful – place to live.  But through it all, love always endures.  It is in the gentle touch of a caregiver and in the opening of Mission Green.  It’s in the joy of our holiday party and in the solariums at dinner time.  It’s in the adapted tech lab and the adult day program.  It’s the warm smile, the loving heart and the compassionate ear of our residents, consumers, volunteers and staff.

Can we individually solve the problems of the world?  I don’t think so.  But WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD for those closest to us with a kind word, a gentle hand and a joyful attitude.  That is the message of the holidays.  Whether you celebrate Chanukah, Kwanza, Christmas or the start of a bright new year you can capture the season by loving one another – and that can, in fact, change the world.

So turn off the TV, skip the internet and connect with the people around you.  In them you will find the holiday spirit.  I know I find it in our Inglis community.  I am surrounded by wonderful people like you, who despite many personal challenges bring love alive each and every day.

Wishing you the happiest of holidays and a wonderful new year.
